About the Program
We at Harlan are set to forge a new generation of engineers with the launch of our new engineering magnet program this fall.

The Harlan Magnet Engineering Program has adopted the Pathway To Engineering™ curriculum from Project Lead The Way® (PLTW) ( http://www.pltw.org/index.cfm ). This program consists is five engineering courses (4 – base courses and 1 – specialized course) which we have integrated into a rigorous college preparatory program consisting of mainly honors and AP level classes. The program immerses students into real-world engineering problems, engaging them in hands-on problem solving teamwork, and project-based learning. Via this real-world hands-on approach students will understand how the skills they are learning in the classroom can be applied in everyday life.

The program at Harlan, which exposes students to both engineering and technology, is the first high school magnet engineering program in the Chicago Public Schools, according to Abigayil Joseph, Academic Enhancement Officer, which is spearheading the implementation and development of this initiative.

“This is a program that will benefit students citywide as well as those who live in the Harlan school community,” Joseph said. “It is the first of its kind, but we expect that its success will lead to replications throughout the school system.”

Objective
By embracing the E3‘s of our mission statement we will inspire students to excel in the technical career of their choice.

Program Goals
· To insure that the majority of the students that start our program, finish our program.
· For the majority of the students that graduate from our program to be accepted into a college or university to pursue the technical career of their choice.
· To provide local industries with the prepared, competent, high-tech employees they need to stay competitive in a global marketplace.
· For the graduates of our program to leave with the skill set and level of self-confidence they need to be outstanding achievers in the best technical programs offered by any college or university.
· To develop young men and women with high moral and ethical standards.
· To develop students that aren’t simply good achievers, but also good humanitarians.
